MAMLUK CEILING - Fine Art Print by Gillian Turnham

This pattern is from the ceiling of the western portico of the Mosque–University of the Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, Cyprus, and Syria: Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan al-Ashraf Barsbay.

While many patterns in the Islamicate world can be found in multiple locations, this one appears to be completely unique to this site. The ceiling is currently in poor condition, and its worn, disintegrating textures inspired the composition and palette for this commissioned artwork.
